Sulawesi silk famous throughout Indonesia. The natural silk is processed into yarn in Soppeng, and in Bone but the weaving is mainly a cottage industry. Farm women are seen with their short looms weaving silks of brilliant colours after their return form the field in the afternoon. They are made in lengths of two meters for sarongs and can be found in shops in Ujung Pandang.
Kendari silver is made in Ujung Pandang and not in the town of Kendari in Southeast Sulawesi. The delicate filigree work is fashioned into jewellery, table ornaments like pinisi schooners, Toraja houses, etc.

Ujung Pandang is a treasure house of antique Chinese porcelain and bronzes. The former was brought as gifts to the nobility by Chinese traders centuries ago. Porcelain and bronze vesells were also part of the possessions buried with the dead belonging to the families of the upper class in Toraja. Antiques can be found in art shops in Ujung Pandang and in the art village of Kete in Toraja.
Bamboo and rattan are made into furniture and household ornaments throughout South Sulawesi where they grow in abundance.
Toraja wood block carving is a traditional art and religious significance. There are believed to be a total of 150 designs belonging. To four colours are symbolic. Red for blood, white and glory and black is death and darkness. Toraja carvings are used to decorate the outer walls of a house and for the tourist trade they come in small squares or pictures, tables, and trays.
Handloomed cloth of heavy cotton is found in the Toraja villages. Basic colours are mainly red, black, and blue and designs are either striped or depict scenes form funeral festivals or the revered water buffalo with its long curved horns.
